Pre-season Top 10

After much demand by my readers (well, really just a couple), here is La Chica's pre-season top 10 for college football. Before we begin, let me give you my standard disclaimer: As you know, your Chica sucks at prognostications so keep that in mind when none of my top 10 teams actually finish in the top 10!

I did my own kind of research by checking out college football sites. I reviewed their choices and then tweaked them a bit for mine. Much to my chagrin, there are no ACC teams in the top 10; I hope I'm wrong on this one. Let's begin:

10) Ohio State - Other sites had OSU at number 6 but weren't they overly rated last year as well? And this season there is no Troy Smith so the fact that they were pre-ranked at 6 shocks me. Oh right, ESPN loves Michigan and Ohio State for whatever reason.

9) Tennessee - Most other sites had Michigan in this spot but I refused to do that. Again, the Big Ten was so over hyped last year and we all saw what happened to the Wolverines in the Rose Bowl. I refuse to pre-rank them in the top 10 this year. I'm over them. Now, on to the Vols, Erik Ainge is coming back and I think that's reason enough to put them in the top 10. Again, I will probably be eating my words on this one come October but....this prediction stuff is hard to do!

8) UCLA - I know, I know but apparently this is the year they have been recruiting and waiting for. The Bruins went 7-6 last year so this is my craziest pick in the top 10. They're returning a whole bunch of peeps however so it should get interesting. I just hope they beat USC again!

7) Arkansas* - As you can see, I put an asterisk next to this one. There is so much turmoil with this program and with Mustain transferring. Drama, drama, drama. That said, they're supposed to come back loaded so we'll see.

6) Oklahoma - OU will do well because the Big 12 sucks again. 'Nuff said.

5) Wisconsin - Yup, I said Wisconsin. Their schedule will prove to be an easy one and they too are bringing back a bunch of players from last year. The only question is how well can they handle the pressure of being considered "good". I would love to see the Badgers win the Big Ten.

4) Texas - Two words: Colt McCoy. This kid was pretty good last year so he should be even better this upcoming season. And again, the Big 12 sucks!

3) LSU - Even though they lost Jamarcus Russell, this team had loads of talent awaiting. I would take one of their backup quarterbacks and start him for Miami in a heartbeat! That's a pretty sad statement on my part.

2) USC - As long as Pete Carroll is around this team will keep producing. Booty comes back as quarterback and even though he's been a bit inconsistent, the rest of the team makes up for it. They've got the cushy Pac 10 schedule to help matters as well.

1) Florida - I'm a firm believer in ranking the returning national champion as number 1 until they jack it up. While I think that there are other teams in the top 5 that will have a better season than Florida, they deserve the number 1 ranking because they won the national championship and they're bringing back some folks. Here's Tebow's chance to prove he can last all game long. Let's just see if they have enough guys to put on a roster to play a game. Given all their jail time and all (ooops, was that out loud?).

Hmmmm, Ohio State goes into #2 Texas and spanks them, beats #2 Michigan in a game for the ages, yet loses one game last year, so "they were overrated". Okay.

Actually, I think a better example of gross overrating would be a Miami team, ranked in the preseason Top 10, that finished 7 - 6 overall and 3 - 5 in a horrible conference.

Um, get your facts straight Trigeek, Miami was never ranked in the pre-season top 10 last year (embarrasingly enough). They just sucked all year!

I think it's funny how you always have to throw Miami into the mix when you know what I'm stating is true. Ohio State was totally overrated last year and honestly, Texas didn't deserve that #2 ranking it had at the beginning of the season either.

And let me not even begin to discuss Michigan who got a total beat down by USC in the Rose Bowl. Face facts, your team was completely overrated last year as was the entire Big Ten! Ask the Gators!

Oh trigeek-OSU got SCHOOLED by Florida. UGA only lost to UF by a score, but Troy Smith had been chasing around the buffets making the "awards" circuit....Rrrright... And don't even get me started on how little Teddy Ginn injured himself celebrating his TD..And his current Dolphin teammates (uh sorry La Chica I know they are not exactly firecrackers)laughed at the choice.

I will miss my man Larry Munson on road games and why is UGA #2?

Uuuggghhh, and then there's Ted Ginn and the Dolphins. What were Cam Cameron and Gary Mueller thinking? As a Dolphins fan, I hope it works out for us but I doubt it. The Dolphins front office needs to be completely fired for all the bad mistakes of the last 5 years.

Wow! Again, one game determines an entire season? How convenient that would be if we applied that to the rest of life. So we lost one game? So we got schooled in one game? Was Florida totally overrated in '95 when they gave up 61 points to Nebraska in the championship game? Oh, and UF beat UGA by less points than they beat OSU. Wellllllll, I guess that means UGA should've finished the year #2. Well, actually, #4, since they also got taken behind the woodshed by Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Snicker. However, since OSU beat Penn State, and Penn State beat down Tennessee, hmmmm, gee, this is getting so complicated. But you go on believing that one game does a season make. That's like saying that Miami sucked two years ago simply because Reggie Ball, the worst QB EVER, beat them in the Orange Bowl. That notion is ridiculous.

Miami WAS in some preseason Top 10's. Check Rivals.com, for one.

Regarding Teddy Ginn's injury, if you had been watching the game instead of watching has-been videos of UGA games from the '80's, you'd have seen that the injury occurred when he was tackled from BEHIND by a teammate. His celebration had nothing to do with it. But go ahead and take your shots. Why let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Wow! Some Dolphin players "laughed" at Teddy Ginn's draft choice? Well, ya got me there. That proves he sucks. Probably the same gabrones that wanted Ricky Bob Marley Cheech N. Chong Williams back on the team. I wonder if one of them was Jason Taylor, yeah, Team Player Jason Taylor who just threw his new QB under the bus. That's going to be a great lockerroom this fall.

Put 9/11/2010 on your schedule right now Sports Chica. You and I are going to be sitting side by side in The Shoe.

Trigeek,

Two Things:
1. I hope Ted Ginn does work out for the Dolphins; I'm not wishing failure here at all. This is my pro team and I hope he proves everyone wrong, including me. I just don't see how he can benefit us. I would have rather chosen a younger QB, not Brady Quinn necessarily but someone younger.

Personally, I would have loved Matt Shaub!

2. Do you really think you and I can sit through a Miami/Ohio ST game together??? I would hope by '10 it would be okay however, only if the Canes improve. I see about 2 more years of sucking for my beloved Canes.

Oh the banter!!! Dawg Diva doesn't live in the past and she certainly isn't sitting around watching games from the 80s. Although she does love VH-1's "Remembering the 80s". I chuckled at the way UGA played sometimes last season. Looked like a scrimmage game. But I can admit that. And losing to Vandy and UK doesnt make the alumni proud. Nor th eyearly loss to UF :(

But alas, you should SHOW up for the national championship game and OSU did not. I mean it IS for the National Title. You would think you would not have prepared fitness wise by gaining 20 pounds Troy .. They were thinking they were the sizzle and yeah they fizzled after they dotted the"i" alright..."O" please...All teams should get laughed at when they lose big in games. Heck I went to bed at the end of the first quarter when UGA failed to show up against WV in the Booger Bowl. I mean don't you think VT felt silly choking in the Chikin bowl to the Dawgs? Ted Ginn? Oops I mean Ted Ginn Jr cause apparently his dad must be on the field too Props to him for getting drafted at number 9. There is a reason why he is smiling in all those photos of him they are showing. Cha ching Cha ching!. I could care less if the Dolphins win or lose.

Go Dawgs-cant wait for football season:)

Dawg Diva,

You don't have to throw the Dolphins into the negativity!

Oops-I wasnt' hating on the Dolphins-not a huge fan of the NFL in general.

And for the record, Dawg Diva does not completely hate on the Big 10. Why Kirk herbstreit is my favorite Buckeye and I just love Micheal Wilbon of Northwestern. He is my favorite columnist:)

I don't think OSU was overrated last year. After the Longhorns game, they looked like they were ready to win it all. Florida was just the better team.

However, OSU did lose a heck of a lot of talent to the NFL (6 players drafted? Or was it more?) And teams like LSU will be uber-dominant by midseason.

The good news is they don't have to play Texas next regular season. Actually, their schedule looks fairly easy next year except for the trip to Michigan.

I wasn't that impressed with their non-conference games for next year, though. They could've picked a more challenging team than roundball powerhouse Youngstown State. Time will tell!

GO DAWGS!

Finish the Drill,

You are so politically correct!

I usually agree with your commentary but I'm gonna stick to my guns on this one and maintain that OSU AND Michigan were both overrated last year. Michigan more so than the Buckeyes.

Finish The Drill

I agree our non-con schedule looks weak this year, but it's about time. I'm not saying it's about time, I'm just saying that we've played one of the toughest non-con schedules in the country over the last six years. We do not shy away from scheduling big games out of conference............like many teams do. We go home and home with Southern Cal in '08 and '09. So, in a five year span, we will have played Texas twice and USC twice. And we're only playing YSU because of Tressel's connection there, much like Tech is playing Sanford. And honestly, this year's "marquee" non-con game, Washington, was probably scheduled years ago when UW was at a much higher level than they are at present. That happens. You can't say OSU is ducking good non-con teams just because this year's marquee opponent is no longer marquee. If you do, then you have to turn a keen eye toward's UGA scheduling Colorado and Oklahoma State the last two years. These two are generally good teams, and probably were the year the contracts were signed..........just not the year UGA plays/played them. I'll blast UGA all day long, but I can't blame them for the misfortune of scheduling a good team ten years ago, only to see that team take a dive when the actual game comes around.

Now, where was I? Oh, yeah, Sports Chica, did you have this epiphany about OSU being overrated before the BCS game or after?

And, you're not going to wiggle out of the 2010 game in The Shoe with me that easily.

Trigeek,
I'm not going to lie, I was seduced by ESPN last season when all they kept talking about was Ohio State and how they were sent from heaven. That's when I discovered how scary ESPN really can be, to think that they can convince people to believe their own hype. And I'm not just talking about college football and OSU here. Once ESPN sets their mind on something, you're (the viewer) gonna believe it whether you intend to or not. That's scary.

Which is why I have limited my ESPN viewing significantly to PTI (b/c I think Tony and Wilbon are hilarious together) and College Gameday in the Fall. And even College Gameday has started to annoy me but it's a great way to kick off your college football Saturday.

Now, as for playing out of conference pansies, every team does it! HOWEVER, and I know all the SEC freaks are gonna jump on me about this, there are some teams in that conference in particular that do it more than others. I'll just throw one out: Florida.

Just sayin'!

SportsChica said...

Oh and Auburn is another SEC team that plays a lot more pansies than most other schools.

Sorry to throw Auburn under the bus because I actually kind of like them let's just call a spade a spade, people.

Anonymous said...

You are just so forthright Chica.

Finish the Drill-I will talk to you upon your return regarding the OSU bus you put your foot on....:)

Anonymous said...

Sports Chica, I agree with your comment concerning MOST of Auburn's non-con opponents. However, they have typically scheduled one decent non-con opponent each year. If my memory is correct, they've played USC twice and Tech twice in the last five years. And, they open with K-State this season. Now, with those exceptions, their other non-con games are a total joke. At least OSU schedules at least one difficult MAC team each year, sometimes two, in addition to a marquee non-con team.

SportsChica said...

However, they (Auburn) played 2 D-1AA teams last year! 2!

I know all teams play 1 a season but 2 in one season??!!!

SportsChica said...

RETRACTION:

Actually, I was wrong about Auburn last year, they only played 1 D-1AA school. My bad.

I don't have the time to do the research right now, but YSU this year will be OSU's first DII opponent in forever.
